In my opinion, scrawling “add-n-pass” on a piece of paper and mailing it to me, is far from the idea of mail art. It all reminds me of those cursed <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chain_letter" style="color: #954f72;">chain letters</a> when I was a kid.<br /></span><span lang="EN-GB">I still like doing truly collaborative pieces with other mail artists, but the add-n-pass is usually annoying. On a rare occasion when I receive one that is all but finished, I will complete it and return to the original sender. Nowadays I scavenge the good bits for one of mail art, artist <a href="https://tofuartsf.blogspot.com/2022/06/mail-art-book-1.html" target="_blank">scrapbooks</a> (see image below ).<br /></span><span lang="EN-GB">The new year began with a brilliant solution to the add-n-pass problem. Often, I start with an old book that I repurpose with collage and paint directly onto the pages. This is the smallest book I’ve done so far. Starting not with a book, but an expired passport. <br />This little book tells a story. The passport belonged to my grandmother who travelled the world more than many people I have known. Growing up, I knew no one who travelled like she did. She was a department store buyer who made frequent trips to California, New York, Hong Kong, and Europe. As a child this was just <i>grandma’s job</i> to me. I knew it was a bit unusual but as an adult, I started</span><span style="font-family: helvetica;"> to understand how extraordinary it was for a woman born in 1919 to have that kind of career. She also played the more traditional grandmother roles with ease — no one made a better apple pie than she did.</span></div>Tofu http://www.blogger.com/profile/10693883324877776139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7273807140874700154.post-16149278499307889152023-07-15T14:41:00.001-07:002023-07-15T14:41:17.890-07:00Summerful Mail <p> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEi4Vm_qOxht0uIE5QxgrsQfJyjcoJ-olXVXIakcJ4x9h74-wguo74qjc_kac8A8Ka48HZJsnNZG5VO9XgDmcL8Mwopz1tl6CrOUNf5RnQR0g3X6Pq1mZmPnm6YVLtp99kxdczgjZIaXHZXAVU86sCaXCbEDQ31X_ndVJYleqes6_-VpxI1MU9vZpr9s49Zb" style="margin-left: 1em; color: #202124;">Amorphophallus titanum</span></i>) at the <a href="https://conservatoryofflowers.org/" style="color: #954f72;">Conservatory of Flowers</a> in Golden Gate Park. It was the worth the wait in line to get a whiff and have a look. The day I saw the flower, it was no longer especially pungent. What struck me is how big and beautiful it really is. The color is an incredible rusty, blood red. I was inspired to capture the palette with this latest piece in my ongoing <i><a href="http://tofuart.com/" style="color: #954f72;">Lines and Color Series</a></i>. </span><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"><o:p></o:p></span></div><div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYpT9iEzUCjfCizRv075hyJsLs0e8cueC93Rzx1nuLeQRkF_-O7a3OrJ4NLWJdYjr0yh5HJj1H7RktzkdpPyPYuxtDRHwWNjVT3Urwgvnfk7VoUcdDxY0s9dNjbRqu6uKupRbX8ExBDZts8UHhDSPWWtm1kcDxqcfAc0KT5tK7zHTqmm05IL4O8BxmCntv/s1081/corpse_flower_IMG_5509.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1081" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYpT9iEzUCjfCizRv075hyJsLs0e8cueC93Rzx1nuLeQRkF_-O7a3OrJ4NLWJdYjr0yh5HJj1H7RktzkdpPyPYuxtDRHwWNjVT3Urwgvnfk7VoUcdDxY0s9dNjbRqu6uKupRbX8ExBDZts8UHhDSPWWtm1kcDxqcfAc0KT5tK7zHTqmm05IL4O8BxmCntv/s320/corpse_flower_IMG_5509.jpg" width="237" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsfsV2MApsTQxMEJsoKMcV9KOnjqzd0pEQHg7kEWKTWCVBAfCW0g0AzkNnAS6i__QW_EKNaInD147RddHOklpiSP3--Mdg-OT5-YOfO99o6eaxocnRLsyt7EQ_pEhuPGg615k7At1gItBm5EuaFbtGQKXPz4ix_IUl-o2h09zY28QAWDJNdoFM5GEZr5j9/s1081/corpse_flower_line.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1081" data-original-width="800" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsfsV2MApsTQxMEJsoKMcV9KOnjqzd0pEQHg7kEWKTWCVBAfCW0g0AzkNnAS6i__QW_EKNaInD147RddHOklpiSP3--Mdg-OT5-YOfO99o6eaxocnRLsyt7EQ_pEhuPGg615k7At1gItBm5EuaFbtGQKXPz4ix_IUl-o2h09zY28QAWDJNdoFM5GEZr5j9/s320/corpse_flower_line.jpg" width="237" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><br /></span></div>Tofu http://www.blogger.com/profile/10693883324877776139noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7273807140874700154.post-18884422983939496292023-07-04T07:00:00.000-07:002023-07-04T07:00:00.135-07:00Happy Birthday Sutro Tower<div><span style="font-family: helvetica;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjJltxaw19ovDy5TdCR18ZmfHNUZ1oH26LE9J4DN8KU_6U6wJsKGv5ykUpt6XBBRSvS3Mx8JarlccOFJnoRGkRH0PDJbK23r7tkF2xfeC6oOLwraJHTm450CWgmUoaI-ZPoaV7d7Oj_sGXjIVYMTXluYjV3sei103pCM5dD2_WeY6T0w34gwdGkOLaQE0qo" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Sutro Tower in the Fog, 9"x12" on paper" data-original-height="1078" data-original-width="800" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjJltxaw19ovDy5TdCR18ZmfHNUZ1oH26LE9J4DN8KU_6U6wJsKGv5ykUpt6XBBRSvS3Mx8JarlccOFJnoRGkRH0PDJbK23r7tkF2xfeC6oOLwraJHTm450CWgmUoaI-ZPoaV7d7Oj_sGXjIVYMTXluYjV3sei103pCM5dD2_WeY6T0w34gwdGkOLaQE0qo=w297-h400" width="297" /></a></div><br />Sutro Tower is 50 years old, and it is time to celebrate our favorite “locals only” landmark.
