Inspired by Embroidery

Sending out a series of 50 hand embroidered postcards would be overwhelming.   But what happens when you carve rubber stamps inspired by Ukrainian folk art?  This latest mail art series is on its way around the world.

Mail Art from Ukraine 🇺🇦

Nowadays it is reassuring to see mail art arrive from Ukraine.  The latest piece from Lubomyr Tymkiv was in the post office box this week.  Check out his blog (also glad to see The Artist in Seine has made a visit from Paris to Lviv).

Post-Folk Art — Ukraine 🇺🇦

For over 20 years, textiles have inspired much of my mixed media artwork.  Since 2017, I have been working on my post-folk art series.  Painting paper and using color palettes from Polish and Kashubian Folk Art.  Next, I cut up the paper and reassemble the pieces in collages.  I have wanted to explore the Ukrainian side of my Eastern European heritage.  This call for mail art for work based on Ukrainian embroidery immediately inspired me.

Mail Art from Ukraine 🇺🇦

Last week mail art was received from Lubomyr Tymkiv in Lviv, Ukraine.  It was mailed just before the invasion and it took months to get here.  I got email from Lubomyr last week and I hope he and everyone in Ukraine can see this war end soon.

The Other Winter Holidays

The Winter Holiday season is in full swing in my mail box.  No valentines yet, but we have a commemoration of the Super, Blood, Blue Moon Eclipse, more new year’s greetings, a feisty Ground Hog Day postcard and also the Year of the Dog.  Perhaps the gentleman from the Museum of Unclaimed Ephemera are obscure vice presidents trying to get in on the Presidents Day action.
