There are plenty of reasons why I enjoy making, sending and
receiving mail art. One is the way that
some of my mail art pieces become studies for larger works. When I saw the call for art for iris-themed
mail art, I was inspired. I
immediately knew what I wanted to create.
My favorite irises are the ones that bloom along the California Coast —
the Douglas iris
(Iris douglasiana). They
appear in spring fields mixed with California poppies. The splashes or bright
orange poppies and purple irises in a lush green meadow are wonderful. This was an obvious choice for one my collagescapes, yet
somehow I still had not explored this theme.
This piece is off to Russia — eventually there will be a much bigger
piece based on this theme.
